Portland Real Estate Remodeling Seminars For Independent Living

The popular seminars started in 1974 at Portland Community College campuses and local high schools as a way for area homeowners to learn more about their homes, understand the remodeling process and gather ideas.

The free Portland area classes are offered nine months out of the year. Award-winning Neil Kelly designers teach all sessions and share trends in design, information on new materials and techniques, as well as review the professional design/build process.

The free one-hour sessions are informal in style, allowing for plenty of questions and discussion.

Events scheduled for Neil Kelly’s Lake Oswego showroom, located at 15573 S.W. Bangy Road, include:

89% of older Americans have told AARP they want to continue to live in their current home and community for as long as possible.

Portland Real Estate Boomers And Seniors Livability Checklist

Portland Real Estate Seniors And Boomer Livability Checklist.allaboutseniorsboomersandsmallhouses.comTherefore, key elements of your Portland home play a crucial role in determining whether or not it will be possible for you to remain in your Portland neighborhood.

Below is a checklist to help you.  If you answer “no” to any of the questions, you might want to consider either changes to your existing Portland home or consider moving to a different home:

Your Portland Home Checklist

Is there a step-free entrance into your Portland home?

Do you have a bedroom, full bath and kitchen facilities on the main floor which are barrier free?

Are the doorways and hallways in your Portland home wide enough to let a wheelchair pass through?

Do doorknobs and faucets have lever handles?

Are kitchen counter-tops at varying heights so you can use them standing or sitting?

Can you easily reach all the kitchen cabinets in your Portland home?

Does the bathtub and or shower have a non-slip surface?

Are all your hallways and staircases well lit?

Are there secure handrails on both sides of the stairways?

Your Portland Community Checklist

Does your Portland community have dependable, regularly scheduled public transportation options such as a bus or light rail service?

Does the public transportation system serve hospitals, clinics, shopping facilities and other destinations of interest to older people?

Is public transportation available within a 10-minute walk from your residence?

Are schedules and route maps readily available and are they easy to read?

Are reduced transportation fares available for older residents?

Is there a dial-a-ride, taxi, van or volunteer driver service in your Portland neighborhood?

Are there sidewalks throughout your Portland neighborhood?

Are there traffic signals at pedestrian crossings and do they allow for sufficient time to cross? Are they well marked?

More Recommendations From AARP

A well-designed home, or a Portland home that has been modified to accommodate the needs of residents of all ages and physical abilities, can promote independence and the satisfaction of staying in control and in your home as you age.

AARP has a long list of requirements necessary to suit the needs of older citizens, in addition to those mentioned above, in their brochure entitled “Your Home And Community: Are They Ready For You?”.

Do you need to sell and move to a different home? If you need to move or if you’d like more information about this publication, give me a call at 503-804-9685 and I can help.

Once again, a new study shows that only 46% of U.S. communities are not prepared for what they are calling the “senior explosion”.

There’s an educational video about how a community can be livable for all ages.

(Produced by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging with funding by Metlife Foundation).

Here’s the video showing how communities, cities, and homeowners can prepare as they age.  The study, discusses what universal design is and the changes that could be made to commercial buildings and homes to accommodate seniors as they age.

Liveable Cities

The video also shows how cities should look at their communities to see what is currently being offered in services and how everyone can be better prepared to meet the needs of an aging boomer population.  It shows how seniors are aging in place, in their own homes and the cities they already live in.

NORC

Any and all communities can become NORCs.  A NORC is a naturally, occurring retirement community.  It includes a mixture of all ages, where everyone can live and where each segment of the population needs are met, particularly those aging in place.

In a NORC, seniors live and participate in the community by giving back and providing assistance to other seniors thereby making their community more liveable for all.

As the video suggests, aging should not be a surprise but a plan.  And, it should be a plan that communities are now making for their boomer and senior population.  Unfortunately, as indicated above, only 46% of the cities across the U.S. seem to have a plan.

Lake Oswego Real Estate Baby Boomers Aging In Their Lake Oswego Homes

Recently I held a listing of mine open that’s in my own neighborhood in Lake Oswego. Lots of the neighbors came by to visit. Every one of them said they want to stay in their homes as they age.Lake Oswego Real Estate Baby Boomers Aging In Their Lake Oswego Homes.allaboutseniorsboomersandsmallhouses.com

The only thing that comes to us without effort is old age”. – Gloria Pitzer

Boomers And Seniors Want One-Level Homes To Age In Place

Unfortunately, all the houses are 2-story homes. No master bedrooms on the main floor and for the most part, no full bath on the main either. We all love our area, its location and driving proximity to amenities. Some of the neighbors have started remodeling their dining rooms to make master bedroom suites and eliminating living rooms entirely making the floor plan look more like a great room concept.

Builders Not Building With Seniors In Mind

For years, I have been whining to home builders to build homes for us “baby boomers”. OK I admit it, I am a “boomer”! Boomers are the largest segment of the population – 70+ million of us, and builders have not accommodated our needs. In recent years, builders have built homes with master bedrooms on the main floor, but the sq. ft. of these homes is more house than seniors need or want.

This evening I read a report about Canadian baby boomers. Same problem. It said that Canadian cities aren’t ready to meet the “challenges” of their aging population either, that 25% of their citizens will be seniors by the year 2036, and the Canadian seniors prefer to “age in place” as well.

Cities And Towns Need To Become More Senior Friendly

The article also said our cities and towns need to become more “senior” friendly. I couldn’t agree more!
