One type of senior housing that’s an option is what is called “congregate housing”.

An example of that is the Oakridge Park Senior Housing on Oakridge Road in the Lake Grove area of Lake Oswego.  This project was going to be completed in the Fall of 2010, however, it is still under construction.  Oakridge Park Senior Housing was mired in debate because of the project’s size, scale and design.

It is what planners call “congregate housing” and is for low-income seniors. “Congregate housing” in the city’s code, serves people that “have life-function disabilities due to age, medical, or mental condition.”

This 4-story building will provide 44 one-bedroom independent-living apartments for seniors along with a two-bedroom manager’s unit is a Northwest Housing Alternatives project, a non-profit developer of affordable housing.  The project is supportive of residents with a full range of mobility impairments and is a supportive community until skilled medical care is necessary. A variety of community spaces provide residents with multiple opportunities for social interaction and engagement. This infill project takes advantage of its central location to essential services within very easy reach of each resident and sits approximately one block off Boones Ferry Road.

Who will be able to live there?

  • Individuals or two-person households – at least one member must be 62 years or older.
  • Residents must have incomes not exceeding 50% of the county median income.  In 2007, this limit was $23,750 for one person and $27,150 for a two-person household.  Rent is based on income.  You will need to check on the current limits as the latest information I have is for 2007.
  • Residents must be US citizens or have legal status.
